Things that make me smile

Over the past two weeks, I have been on an emotional roller coaster. As some of you know, my dad just underwent pretty major surgery to straighten out his spine, realign some discs in his back that are now being held in place by rods and screws and to fix some spinal compression he had in his neck. It's going to be a long, painful road to recovery for all of us and I thank you guys for your prayers, positive thoughts and well wishes for my dad, my family and me.
My brother and I have been going at it since he got here, there have also been a few personal issues that I don't care to discuss anymore and add all that to the fact that this is PMS week. With all of that, I'm in need of a serious smile, aww Hell, I need laughter. And this got me to thinking, I should compile a list of the Top 10 things that make me smile and or laugh hysterically.
I'm gonna do this VH1 style and start from the bottom and go to the top. But I'm not gonna give 'em all to you in an hour or less, you gotta come back for the rest of them later.
So starting from No. 10, here we go:

10. Tyler Perry as Medea. Say what you will but this is funny to me! Everybody feels some kinda way about this dude and him dressing up in drag, but it's funny to me!
*Take that Rocky! :-P*

9. Reese Witherspoon in "Freeway." If you've never seen this movie, slap yourself and then go rent it! This movie came out when Witherspoon was unknown and my sister and I discovered it in the middle of the night while we were on summer vacation. It came on Cinemax so you know we had NO business watching it as 12 and 14-year-olds. Still, it's funny as crap!

8. The Cosby Show Reruns always make me smile if not fall out laughing. My favorite episode is when Cliff had a nightmare that all the men were pregnant. Another favorite is the Gordon Gartrelle episode and the ones where they performed for their grandparents. I could use one of those right now!

7. "Life" with Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence, Bernie Mac, Guy Torry, Anthony Anderson and er'ybody else! When I pop this DVD in I watch it like I've never seen it before. It's a combination of the funny ass lines and the way the actors portrayed the characters. Claude and Ray as old men still holds up and 10 years later, this movie is still hee-larious!

6. "Harlem Nights" with Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, Della Reese and others. This is another DVD I can pop in and laugh all day long. If ever there were kings of comedy Pryor and Foxx are definitely among them. My favorite scenes in the movie include the exchanges between Redd Foxx and Della Reese because they sound like the old married couple who love to hate each other but would never get a divorce.

It's my 100th post ...

... and it's all come full circle. My first real post was talking about an ill-fated celebrity couple and whaddaya know, this one is about another ill-fated couple.
It seems that Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds will not be putting their relationship on paper. In case you've been living under a rock, the two had a "symbolic" wedding of the French island of Bora Bora. Since they did not wed in the states, their marriage is not legally binding and they don't plan to make it so.
Hmmmmmm. It's only been two weeks, I wonder what's going on now that wasn't going on two weeks ago.
Now, I'm not one to speculate, but I heard somebody say that Johnny Gill might have something to do with that. I certainly hope not, but that rumor has been following them for years. A rumor doesn't stick around much longer than a year unless there's some truth to it.
I'm just saying. Besides, I think the picture says it all, they're going in different directions (lol) - and they need to separate while they're still friends.
The two are quoted in People magazine, the same People magazine who supposedly had pictures of their "intimate" wedding.
"After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forego having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further," Murphy and Edmonds told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement.
"While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends.”
I wonder if they have the same deep love that Brandy and her babydaddy had that made him out the fact that they were never married. Oh well, I get the feeling that Babyface is somewhere laughing and singing, "You never know, you never know when. You never know, you never, never, never, never, never know, know, know, know, know oooh oh ..."

Celebrities and their relationships ...

... are once again dominating the news.
Apparently Usher has another confession. He married his knocked-up fiance today in his lawyers office. ~starry eyed~ "How romantical!"
The May-December couple were set to get married last weekend but cancelled their nuptials without any explanation to their guests or the press.
There were a lot of rumors surrounding the reason the couple decided to call off the wedding. One was that his mother was against it, another was that she'd had some complications with the baby and the other was that the two couldn't agree on a ceremony.
Any or all of those things could be true, but honestly, I really don't care either way. Usher is one of those stars that I just don't really care what he does when he's not performing. You know those "celeb-reality" shows that show how the stars live and how their houses are decorated and all that? If he were the subject, I really wouldn't watch it. In fact, I'd break my neck to avoid it. He's just not on my list of "interesting people."
But someone who is on my list is Eddie Murphy. I don't know why that dude was fresh out of a marriage and was not using protection when he was with Ginger Spice. Murphy finally admitted that he is her "babydaddy."
Murphy is engaged to Tracie Edmonds, Babyface's ex, and said in an interview that he will continue to take care of that child like he does his others. He already has five other children from his previous marriage and Edmonds has two of her own.
Talk about "Daddy Day Care," that's a lot of kids. You just don't see families that big anymore. If they keep on, they're going to have a baseball team, shoot, if they like basketball, they already have a starting five and three riding the pine.
Hey, Eddie thinks he can sing, he should put instruments in their hands and be the chocolate-dipped Partridge Family. Instead of singing an R&B version of "I Think I Love You," they can sing "Party All the Time," they might even have a leg up since they'll have Babyface's kids in the group.
OK, I'm done with them. Onto other relationships that could possibly affect me, and some of you, CNN posted a story earlier today about interracial relationships. Click here when you get a minute, http://www.cnn.com/2007/LIVING/personal/08/06/interracial.dating.ap/index.html.
For those of you who won't, read it, the spin on this story the fact that more and more black women are dating and in some cases marrying outside of their races.
For those of you who know me, you know I have no problem with dating outside my race, in fact I am happy that more of my sistern are being more open minded about dating men outside of our race.
I think it is high time that we let go of this fantasy of having the perfect black knight in shinning armor to sweep us off our feet. I say we come on back to reality and recognize that men are men, regardless of race or color.
Instead of color being the first thing we look for in a man we should be looking to make sure that he is a good man. I don't give a crap if the dude is black, white, Hispanic, Asian or plaid with white polka dots, if he is good to me then I am cool with it!
I would much rather have a white man treat me like the queen I am than to have a black man treat me like dirt.
Oh yea, and here's a little more food for thought, why is it that folks have a problem with interracial dating, but only when it involves black and brown folks?
Think about it.

Is it just me ...

or should President Bush take advantage of the Employee Assistance Program and go lie horizontal on a psychiatrist's couch, preferably someone like Dr. Phil?
The man is delusional. Even after yesterday's report, he thinks that we can win the war. The man has been quoted saying that our guys "will prevail." Somebody e-mail the president and let him know that we've already lost.
Just yesterday, we lost 11 more troops. Which brings the grand total to about 2,919 since 2003. That does not even to begin to include the thousands who have been wounded physically and mentally. When will it end?
But on a brighter note, the jackass has finally admitted that, "It's bad in Iraq." Well no s---, Sherlock. I don't know what is better, his hindsight or his ability to deflect questions. At a press conference, a reporter asked him when he'd start to make decisions on implementing the changes detailed in the report. He says that there are still studies being conducted.
OK, it's my turn to e-mail the president now to tell him that things don't go so well when he studies. Look at how college turned out for him. And get this ya'll, now he's planned a 'major speech.'
Everybody say it with me now, "So."
The last thing we want to see is this imbecile on TV, interrupting "Ugly Betty" or "Grey's Anatomy" to tell us what we already know. "The war is bad and I don't know how to fix it."
I am just tired folks. Tired.
But hey, I have some good news. Mary J. Blige got nominated for eight Grammys this time around. I am so happy and proud for her. She deserves all the due she's getting this time around.
And in crazy negro news, Eddie Murphy is denying that he is the father of Mel B.'s baby. For those of you who have a short musical attention span, Mel B., used to be Scary Spice, i.e. the only sista in the Spice Girls.
The two dated for a hot minute and split a little over a month ago, shortly after Mel announced her pregnancy to the world. Now, I am hoping that Eddie didn't leave just because Mel is preggors, but somehow, I am not surprised.
The man just got out of a 13-year marriage where he had five children and then he and the Spice Girl started dating. I am guessing that he didn't want to do the family thing so soon. But hey don't worry about him, he's dating Babyface's ex, Tracey Edmonds who has two kids of her own.
Seeing as how Tracey and Eddie both just left marriages, she and her ex were also married for 13 years, I seriously doubt that they'd both be trying to rush into another family. I have a great idea, if Eddie would just use a condom, he wouldn't have to go that route again.
